The HMMVW or Humvee came into service in 1984. The Humvee gradualy replaced the Ford MUT and military light trucks as troop, weapons and cargo carrier. Over 190, 000 have been built and sold around the world. The M966 TOW carrier version had basic light composite armour giving some protection against spinters.

The M902 FISTv (FIreteam SupporT vehicle) based on the M113 had a vision system built into an articulated mast, that could be raised to search for artillery targets from behind cover.
The vehicle contained sophisticated navigation and communication systems linked to HQ.

M1A1 Abrams (120mm)
This development of the M1 replaced the 105mm gun with the German designed 120mm L44 smoothbore gun. This version entered service in 1986 with its distinctive longer turret.
It had improved armour, gunnery, NBC protection and ammunition storage. These served with distinction in the 1st Gulf war.
