This development of the M1 replaced the 105mm gun with the German designed 120mm L44 smoothbore gun. This version entered service in 1986 with its distinctive longer turret.
It had improved armour, gunnery, NBC protection and ammunition storage. These served with distinction in the 1st Gulf war.

M60 A2 “Starship”
The M60-A2 was an attempt to combine a gun and ATGM launcher to increase the range and accuracy of the main weapon. The system proved slow and unreliable. 540 built from 1973 and eventually withdrawn from service in 1981. The nic-name Starship is believed to have come from the amount of switches and lights inside.
