The MIM 72 Chaparral SAM system was based on the M548 transporter. These entered survice in the 1969. The missile was developed from the succesful Sidewider air to air missile. These worked in teams with the M163 VADS cannon sytem to cover short and mediumĀ ranges. Used by West Germany and Israel, the system was withdrawn from US service in the late 1990s.

Often refered to as VADS, based on the M113, it’s Vulcan cannon is capable of 4000 rpm. The turret is powered and has a radar rangefinder but realies on operator skill and clear weather to hit aircraft targets. Used in the Veitnam war and the Isreali Lebonon conflict.
